Os Shiba Inus são ancestrais dos mais conhecidos Akitas, e o seu nome, no dialeto de Amatsu significa 'pequeno cão'. Apesar do tamanho, os Shiba Inus são bastante independentes e ótimos cães de caça, usados para encontrar pequenos animais. Dizem as lendas que o um cão desta raça é a única coisa que pode deter a fúria do Atroce, já que quando ainda era humano, este guerreiro amaldiçoado tinha uma paixão especial por essa raça.
