Os Shiba Inus são ancestrais dos mais conhecidos Akitas, e o seu nome, no dialeto de Amatsu significa 'pequeno cão'. Apesar do tamanho, os Shiba Inus são bastante independentes e ótimos cães de caça, usados para encontrar pequenos animais.
