Merchant Job Change Guide (Ragnarök Online – Renewal)
Overview
The Merchant job change quest in Renewal is quick and beginner-friendly. Merchants specialize in commerce and utility: buying low, selling high, expanding cart capacity, and using money-powered skills. This guide explains how to change from Novice to Merchant in Alberta.
Requirements
- Base Level: Any level (recommended 10+)
- Job Level: 10 (Novice)
- Skills: All Basic Skills learned (Basic Skill level 9 or all novice skill points spent)
- Items: None required
- Zeny: None required (startup fee removed in Renewal)
Step 1: Meet the Requirements
Before you head to Alberta, make sure you have:
- Reached Novice Job Level 10
- Learned all Basic Skills up to level 9 (or spent all Novice skill points)
If you don’t meet these requirements, keep leveling as a Novice until you do.
Step 2: Go to the Merchant Guild in Alberta
- City: Alberta (Merchant Guild building)
- Map: alberta_in
- NPC: Guildsman Mahnsoo (also appears as Chief/Guildsman in script)
- Coordinates: (53, 43)
What to do:
- Talk to Guildsman Mahnsoo
- Choose “I want to be a merchant.”
What happens:
- The NPC checks that you are a Novice and verifies your Basic Skill requirement.
- If you don’t meet the requirement, he instructs you to learn Basic Skills first.
- If you meet the requirement, he proceeds with the job change process.
Step 3: Become a Merchant and Receive Rewards
Once you pass the checks, you will be changed into a Merchant and receive a starting weapon.
You receive:
- Job Change: Novice → Merchant
- Equipment: N_Battle_Axe (Novice Battle Axe)
Notes:
- As a Merchant, you’ll soon learn signature skills like Cart Revolution, Change Cart, and Loud Exclamation via normal skill progression.
Optional Dialog: About Merchants and Requirements
If you choose informational options, Guildsman Mahnsoo will explain:
- Merchants focus on trading and money-making rather than combat prowess.
- They can equip most weapons except Bows, Rods, and Two-Handed Swords.
- The Basic Skill requirement (level 9 or all novice skill points spent) is mandatory.
- The old “startup fee” is no longer charged in Renewal.
Special Cases
Reborn Characters (Upper Class)
If you are a High Novice (reborn) destined for transcendent second jobs (Whitesmith/Creator path):
- Talk to Chief Mahnsoo at the same location.
- If you meet the Basic Skill requirement, you’ll change to High Merchant directly.
- Permanent skills granted on change per script behavior:
- MC_CARTREVOLUTION Level 1
- MC_CHANGECART Level 1
- MC_LOUD Level 1
- Trick Dead is removed as part of the transition.
Already Another Job or Already Merchant
- If you’re already a Merchant, Mahnsoo will point out you’ve already changed.
- If your base job isn’t Novice, you cannot switch to Merchant via this NPC.
